Our Story

We supply high-fired, chip resistant stoneware for hospitality and gift stores around New Zealand. All of our wheel thrown pottery is hand built from a slump of clay.

Our bespoke stoneware has been hand-crafted with a strong focus on both durability and aesthetic pleasure. We are dedicated to designing practical stoneware that looks beautiful, whilst meeting food grade standards and minimal impact on the environment. As beautiful to use as they are to look at, WestCoast Stoneware will enhance the everyday home or commercial space with simplistic beauty and usability.

From the beginning?

It’s not about the equipment but about who’s behind it that really matters

Every small business starts somewhere, and ours was the carport of our flat in Raglan, New Zealand. We sourced our equipment online and travelled the country to pick up second hand bits and bobs. Eventually we had what we could call a ‘studio’. This was made up of 100kg prehistoric wheel, Raku Kiln, 2 mis-matched shelves, a bench balancing on a broken pug machine, a pile of bricks, and an old wardrobe minus the handles. Enough to work with so our head potter got to it and slopped our first ranges together.

From the start our goal was to provide the highest quality of stoneware. Stone that remained unscathed, scratched, chipped or rarely broken in a busy commercial kitchen.

Nation Pottery

Michael Nation, Ceramic Craftsman

Born and raised in Oceanside, California. Michael Nation has been mastering the art of ceramics since he found his passion at school over 8 years ago. Almost a decade later of working around the globe, Michael has now fulfilled his dreams of managing his own production line for WestCoast Stoneware. After a messy day in the studio you will find him sitting under the ledge, getting swallowed and spat out of heaving tubes at Manu Bay.
