The Pottery Process
Step One
‘Slopping Pots’
An ancient skill still used in its simplest form. Hand thrown on the potters wheel - only modern wheels are high speed and electric.
A slab of clay can be transformed before your eyes and moulded into functional piece of art.
Step Two
Bisque: The First Firing
The kiln - either electric or gas - is lined with ceramic fiber wool, and heated to temperatures of 1020°c. The clay dries into one solid shape, shrinking slightly as it hardens.
Step Three
Glazing the Piece
Glazing is the last part of the process, refining and adding that final touch. Dipping or brushing the glaze onto the piece creates an impervious coating of beautiful colour. We then fire again at 1200°C ( just shy of lava temperature) to create a smooth finish that is safe for food and drink.
